Paris, je T’aime review
Posted by Mona - No Comments
Take the case of Steve Buscemi, who’s sitting on a bench in the Metro station at the Tuileries quietly studying his guidebook when he glimpses a couple of energetic young lovers on the opposite platform. He’s smiling indulgently just as the man draws breath between kisses and the two make eye contact. Big mistake. What comes next encapsulates all the hazards of foreign travel in five action-packed minutes.
Tuileries, one of the 18 short films that make up Paris, is described as “…one of the more sardonically successful of the short films.” Itis directed by the Cohen brothers and stars Buscemi, so it’s chances of rocking are very high. There are oodles of talented actors and directors in this French collaboration, including Natalie Portman, Marianne Faithfull, Frédéric Auburtin, Wes Craven, Willem Dafoe (eee!!), Miranda Richardson… people, I could go on all day.
Check out the full review here. I have been waiting for this movie for a looong time and it’s looking sooo gooooood. I want, I WANT.

In Conversation With
Posted by Mona - No Comments‘In Conversation With…’ featuring actor and director Steve Buscemi; tonight at 7PM. This event is sold out. Hopefully video will become available in the next few days. [Link]
[edit: there was an article about this on Wednesday, but the source deleted it and I haven't come up with anything else since. But I assure you, Buscemi was witty and modest and everyone just loved him to pieces. -M]
Soprano stuff
Posted by Mona - No CommentsEverybody together now: WELCOME BACK, SOPRANO!
That’s right, the “final season” (so they say) of The Sopranos kicked off last night on HBO. In honor of this happy occasion, here’s a Top Six of the most unforgettable whacks… and that includes our friend Blundetto. Although Buscemi is no longer a part of The Family, he has referred to his ganger gig as one of his favorite jobs to date. The show’s brilliant and will most certainly go out with a bang.
In case you missed the first seven seasons, have a gander at this video (or just look on the sidebar).
Buscemi does Sarasota

Okay, so maybe Cannes is out. It looks like Buscemi is slated to attend the Sarasota Film Festival that kicks off later this month. He’ll be there to promote Paris, Je T’aime. Not only that, but he’s being honored with the Sarasota FF World Cinema Award. Congratulations!
Steve Buscemi, monster

I don’t even know how this got in my e-mail box, but I think it’s fantastic and you will too.
Buscemi’s character in Fargo was the inspiration for Bong Joon-ho’s movie The Host. In fact, both the director and the designer nicknamed it “Steve Buscemi”.
“Could you please call our creature Steve Buscemi?” Bong Joon-ho asks, claiming that Buscemi’s character in Fargo was the “character reference” while creating The Host’s title creature. I give it some thought — hmm, Buscemi’s murderous goofball character is a very American sort of monstrosity, The Host deals with the same — and I say, “OK, sure. Steve Buscemi it is.”
Absolutely hilarious. They could have named the monster Carl Showalter but they went instead for the actor, which is just so appropriate. Plenty of Buscemi’s portrayals are nasty, despicable men - indeed, that’s what he’s best known for. What a compliment, to be recognized for doing what you do best!
Cannes we get in Cannes?
Posted by Mona - No Comments(Hee hee.)
Cannes Film Fest kicks off May 12, and a big chunk of selections are still up in the air. With Sony picking up Interview, it’s obvious that one’s probably out of the running. Delirious has been making the festival rounds almost as much as Interview, albeit much more quietly. Does it have a chance? Judging by the movies already announced, it might just. Scorsese, Tarantino and Allen are right up Buscemi’s alley.
Charlotte’s Web: Meh
Posted by Mona - No CommentsFirst Charlotte’s Web DVD review is out. Once again, Buscemi saves the day:
The animals weren’t that funny, except for Templeton the rat, marvelously voiced by Steve Buscemi.
A cast of monkeys could play the roles and the movie would still be good - it’s Charlotte’s Web for God’s sake. Even the remake of The Cat In The Hat had a certain charm about it that saved it from being a total disaster. Aside from the flat tones of Julia Roberts (who goes through the film sounding as if she’s lost all will to live) the movie is great. Is it worth the $5.24 to rent? Most definately.
Chuck and Larry poster
Posted by Mona - No CommentsFor those of you who dig posters, here is the official one for I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry:

The image is brought to you by /Film, so lets all cross our fingers and hope they don’t make me remove it. Chuck and Larry releases July 20, 2007. Early reviews point to a typical Sandler flick, and by that I mean fantastic fun for everyone. Yay!
Charlotte’s Web to DVD

Charlotte’s Web, the live-action movie based on EB White’s classic children’s book, is out on DVD April 3. It’s gotten some very good reviews, and is fun and appropriate for children and adults. It’s not a musical, but it’s charming and heartwarming and all the squishy stuff that made the book a classic.
You can watch the Paramount trailer here.
