For nearly two decades, the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences has been bestowing Emmys to guest stars. The nominees tend to be big-name stars, and their brief appearances on ongoing series generate heightened interest.

Sometimes the actors help the ailing TV show, but sometimes things work the other way ’round.
